It is worthwhile highlighting the following statement made by the Chairman of LIS based upon the achievement of 498Wh/kg on first discharge cycle and 456Wh/kg on subsequent cycles:

"We believe these outcomes are indicative of what is probably the best performing commercial-sized cell in the world."

LIS may not be privy to, for example, research and development programs at the US Departments of Defence and Energy, but this statement is very credible because it would have access to the best sources of information available through its network.

There are at least three observations that can be made:

    1. LIS is barely scraping the theoretical maximum potential of lithium sulphur cells. If it is the best today, it still has a clear runway to continuous improvement in cell performance.
    2. Many if not most technology industries are "winner take all." If it is the best today, the commercial potential of LIS is probably much under-recognised, and consequently its value potential is similarly much under-recognised.
    3. Points 1. and 2. if subject to ongoing confirmation and ratification could well provide a pathway to funding for the much larger LIS battery production facilities that it identifies. Such funding is large in relation to LIS, but small in relation to the best battery technology in the world. Material Australian Government support would probably be forthcoming too.

It is pleasing to see LIS achieve these performance results as well as more effectively communicating them to the market.
