Even the Libs now are convinced Abbott stands for nothing and anything. They have formed a group to try and keep him in line. It is such an embarrasment for Abbott.

Libs move to keep Abbott on track
FORMER treasurer Peter Costello and former senior minister Nick Minchin are the patrons of a ginger group of opposition MPs that has been set up to try to ensure the Coalition does not desert rational economic policy.

Some Liberal MPs are concerned the pragmatism of Tony Abbott is compromising opposition economic policy.

The launch came as outspoken Liberal backbencher Alby Schultz confronted Mr Abbott in the Liberal party meeting yesterday, complaining about the Nationals getting too much say and the leader's office muzzling MPs.

Liberal sources said Mr Schultz used colourful language and continually pointed his finger at Mr Abbott.

He also objected to Mr Abbott's senior staff, communications guru Tony O'Leary and chief of staff Peta Credlin, trying to control what MPs say and their media appearances.

While Mr Schultz is known for his forthrightness, his comments reflect wider concern among Liberals. Rural Liberals resent the Nationals, believing they often are given more licence. The Abbott office's sometimes heavy-handed media strategy has alienated not just some backbenchers but frontbenchers who object to being told when they can and can't go on television.
