'Spitting threat' to police ahead of Black Lives protest

Activists have threatened police command with spitting, inflammatory chanting and other forms of physical abuse during Saturday’s "Black Lives Matter" protest in Melbourne in an attempt to provoke use-of-force responses from officers.
A senior government source has told The Age police are preparing for tactics from some protesters on Saturday designed to provoke physical confrontation and produce images of police brutality, and Premier Daniel Andrews warned of a "volatile situation" on the streets of Melbourne.

Victoria's Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton issued a statement on Thursday warning protesters that "now is not the time" to put people's health at risk by attending a mass gathering during the COVID-19 pandemic.
His comments came as the Andrews government has sharpened its "stay away" message to would-be protesters amid criticism it has effectively given the go-ahead for a mass gathering of tens of thousands of people.
