    Group targets racist publications

Racist publications which are being posted on the Internet and put into mailboxes will be targeted by a new community harmony group, which was set up in New South Wales the wake of the Bali bomb blasts.

The group, set up last week at the request of Premier Bob Carr, met for the first time in Sydney last night, in the presence of police commissoner Ken Moroney.

Made up of representatives of the Islamic community, the task force aims to prevent any hate against muslim communities following the Bali tragedy and talk of a war with Iraq.

The chair of the Community Relations Commission, Stepan Kerkyasharian, says the group has resolved to work against the publication of inciting and offensive material.

He says most of the publications in question are on the Internet, but some are being put into people's mailboxes.

Mr Kerkyasharian says the group will also focus on community safety and education.

Going into last night's meeting of the Community Relations Commission, commissioner Moroney said such racist incidents will not be tolerated.

"There have been a number of incidents, about three or four in all, which do give me rise for concern," he said.

"There have been matters reported to the police of verbal abuse to members of the islamic community.

"Now clearly we're not going to tolerate that. I think we have a greater level of patience and tolerance as an Australian community."
