I note the German’s, and France’s ingenious thinking on the matter. It’s a lot like the global warming debate. It’s my belief that changing an industry from the old (say fossil fuel based power generation, or petrol cars) to the new creates a multiplying effect on the labour market. To replace existing infrastructure with new, upgraded infrastructure creates 10-fold more jobs (and I’m not even going to mention the technology research/development related jobs). This however doesn’t suit the vested interests and this is why there’s so much debate. A lobbyist produces data, be it right or wrong, it’s irrelevant, and they sell it to the community. The community buys into whatever is being sold and suddenly we have political pressure which flies in the face of actual economics.
Understand being at the forefront of the EV market, or even new technology power generation will create a lot more jobs than the labour-light (driverless trains, trucks etc.) coal/oil/power industries. There’s many real-life examples, and studies proving this.
Germany and France (and therefore the EU) also has a dependency on Russian/Middle Eastern resources to power their economy. Something they have been uncomfortable with since the Russian’s turned off the gas pipeline to the Ukraine in 2009 for unpaid bills (so they said). People died.
It looks like the EU will create a market, develop it, and harness the jobs and growth which are by-products of new industry while much of the world watches on. It’s also gets them off their addiction to Russian gas/Middle Eastern oil. Brilliant. Well-played!
It’s also why I’m happy KNL has signed up with German/European partners. Development is happening, wealth will be generated, and I want a piece of it.
