A couple of quick posts to help, remembering I am not a geoligist or scientist.

There appears to be some cocern regarding the seperation of Phosphate and Uranium, as is the norm this is generally from a lack of eduction. It is more common than one may expect.

Uranium is also present in very low grade amounts (50 to 200 parts per million) in some domestic phosphate-bearing deposits of marine origin. Because very large quantities of phosphate-bearing rock are mined for the production of wet-process phosphoric acid used in high analysis fertilizers and other phosphate chemicals, at some phosphate processing plants the uranium, although present in very low concentrations, can be economically recovered from the process stream.

11) Commercial Uranium Production (back to top)
While the presence of uranium decay-products makes gypsum a tough sell for the phosphate industry, the uranium has, at various times, presented the industry with a business opportunity of its own.
One of the lesser-known-facts about the phosphate industry is that its processing facilities have produced and sold sizeable quantities of uranium.
In 1997, just two phosphate plants in Louisiana produced 950,000 pounds of commercial uranium, which amounted to roughly 16% of the domestically produced uranium in the US.
In 1998, the same two plants produced another 950,000 pounds, but due to declining market prices for uranium, both plants have since ceased production.
If market prices improve, however, 4 US phosphate plants (2 in Louisiana & 2 in Florida) would have the capacity to produce a combined 2.75 million pounds of uranium per year, according to the Department of Energy (DOE). The DOE has termed these 4 facilities "Nonconventional Uranium Plants."

From "DAP Quality Seminar"
FLORIDA INSTITUTE OF PHOSPHATE RESEARCH
1986....
Good Clarifier Operation
Some of the plants that have installed uranium
recovery in recent years have also installed large
clarifiers for the 28% P205 filter acid. These are
large diameter clarifier E with rakes and a center
take-off for settled solids. These are operated
with a constant level, and peripheral overflow.
They have been very efficient in solids removal. A
good clarifier can product as low as 0.1% suspended
solids at times without flocculents. They do a much
better job of solids removal than the combination
clarifier-storage tanks. When these uranium plants
first went on-stream, the first problem encountered
in the DAP plant was product overgrade, with values
reported as high as 19% N and 47% P 0 due to the
cleaned-up low solids acid. This k&a of grade
problem is much easier to correct than one which is
below grade.

Even doing it in Iraq.

5. CHEMICAL PROCESSES.
5.A. URANIUM EXTRACTION. THE SEPARATELY-CONTRACTED URANIUM
EXTRACTION FACILITY AT THE CHEMICAL COMPLEX SEGREGATED "YELLOW
CAKE" FROM PHOSPHATE ROCK, THE FIRST STEP IN URANIUM EXTRACTION.
RUMOR HAD IT THAT THE YELLOW CAKE WOULD BE FURTHER PROCESSED FOR PURIFICATION BY PAKISTAN. [ b.2. ] THE PRESENCE OF THIS FACILITY CAUSED CONCERN FOR THE SAFETY OF WORKERS, BOTH BECAUSE OF INTERNAL RADIATION AND BECAUSE OF THE POTENTIAL THREAT OF ISRAELI AIR RAIDS.
