A traditional Aboriginal naming ceremony for Australia's largest diamond will take place today when it is unveiled at the Northern Territory Museum and Art Gallery in Darwin.

The 105-carat diamond, worth $1 million, was found at Merlin mine south of Borroloola last year.

Traditional owners from the Borroloola region will take part in the ceremony.

Elders from the Garrawa and Gurdanji clans have already bestowed a name on the diamond.

It is hoped the diamond's traditional name will preserve its link to its place of origin.
