Australia's largest diamond has been unveiled in Darwin.

The gem was discovered at Argyle Diamond's Merlin mine, 80 kilometres south of Borroloola in the Territory's Gulf country.

At 104.73 carats and valued at over $1 million, the uncut diamond is larger than the Hope and Dresden diamonds combined.

It was unearthed in March last year.

At its unveiling at the Northern Territory Museum the gem was officially named the Gungulinya-Bunagina diamond.

It was named by the Garrawa and Garandji clans, the traditional owners of the land where the mine exists.

It is the only time the diamond will be on public display before being shipped to Belgium.
