Electric cars make a fast charge into history

Motorists will soon be able to drive from Adelaide to Melbourne without pumping petrol after the opening of the first ultra-rapid electric car chargers in regional South Australia.

In as little as 15 minutes, electric car drivers are now able to recharge their vehicles with enough energy to travel up to 450kms, using the two Chargefox ultra-rapid chargers opened last week at the Keith BP on the Dukes Highway.

They can roam the state’s South East – including the iconic Coonawarra wine region – in electric only powered cars by using the new ultra-rapid chargers which pump out electricity up to 50 times quicker than a household power outlet, or eight times quicker than the next best chargers.

Electric vehicles will also be able to travel between Adelaide and Melbourne once more of these ultra-rapid chargers are built in Horsham and Ballarat later this year, all powered by 100 per cent renewable energy.

The installation of the electric charge outlets on the Dukes Highway is a historic motoring event, RAA said, because these outlets address anxiety about distances electric vehicles can travel before a recharge.

The two chargers are able to simultaneously power up electric vehicles and are owned and managed by Chargefox, a company that RAA and other motoring clubs interstate have a financial interest in.

RAA mobility technology specialist Mark Borlace said he was excited South Australia’s largest motoring organisation was contributing to this historic initiative.

“This is most definitely a ground-breaking event – they are the first very fast chargers in country SA,’’ he said.

“It’s akin to the opening of the first petrol bowser outside of Adelaide.

“The Keith ultra-rapid chargers will make a trip between Adelaide and Melbourne a reality for owners of most electric vehicles.’’

The Keith outlets are the latest link in a network of 22 ultra-rapid chargers owned by Chargefox, which will eventually provide rapid recharge for electric vehicles to travel between Adelaide and Brisbane.

Marty Andrews, Chargefox CEO, said: “We decided to continue our roll out of Australia's largest EV charging network in Keith, as it’s one of many charging stations we plan to open to connect Melbourne and Adelaide.

The location gives EV drivers the chance to quickly and easily charge, no matter where their final destination is.”

“The Keith charging station is the first of two South Australian charging stations, with the second planned to open in greater Adelaide later this year.

This means the drive from Melbourne to Adelaide in an EV will be seamless and easy, and all powered by renewable energy”

Sales of electric cars across Australia, including hybrid plug-ins, more than tripled in 2019 to 6718, up from 2216 in 2018.

They will make up 60 per cent of new car sales by 2046, according to the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics.

Mr Borlace said the Hyundai Kona electric SUV he recently charged up at Keith could do the trip from Adelaide to Melbourne at around half the cost compared to the same petrol fueled model.

“Using South Australian power, the electric engine also produces 40 per cent less carbon dioxide than its petrol engine equivalent,’’ he said.

“RAA looks forward to the release this year of the State Government’s electric vehicle strategy, which fast chargers will help achieve targeted reductions in the state’s greenhouse gas emissions.’’

Tatiara Mayor Graham Excell said the installation of the fast chargers was a boost for the region.

“Hopefully they will be successful, which I’m sure they will be, because this is the way technology is going,’’ he said.

    Electric Vehicle Fast Charging Network

The future of cars is electric and just as the NRMA was there to help Australia navigate the rise of the automobile 100 years ago, we are helping future generations navigate this new era of electric vehicles.

That's why we've committed $10 million to build one of Australia's largest electric vehicle fast charging networks.

Free for Members, this network will grow to more than 40 electric vehicle fast chargers covering 95% of Members' road trips.

Lowering the overall cost of electric vehicle ownership, we're improving Australia's charger accessibility so you can keep moving, long into the future.

Tesla Semis Are Cheaper Than Rail Enough Of The Time To Reshape Ground Freight

In the future, a lot more freight tonnage will end up on roads in Tesla Semis and similar vehicles from Daimler and other vendors.

It’s the nature of the beast.

Freight rail has to innovate more to deal with this competitive threat.

In Europe, they have already shifted powering freight trains to external power lines, running the electric traction engines not off of electricity from the diesel generators but from remote wind and solar farms.

That’s increasingly going to be done in the rest of the world.

In China, high-speed rail is all electric with externally supplied electricity.

This isn’t hard, it’s just not the freight rail standard yet.

The engines are all diesel electric hybrids as it is, so displacing the diesel part is relatively straightforward.

And freight rail companies are experimenting with adding batteries as well, not only charging them at terminals to supplement diesel, but also filling them en route with dynamic braking being turned into regenerative braking and with externally supplied electricity when available.

    All transportation is electrifying.

All transportation is moving to lower labor costs.

All transportation is becoming more loosely coupled.

All transportation is moving to lower carbon models.

But the Tesla Semi is going to have a substantial advantage once it’s on the roads, and for a decade after that.

No other manufacturer has anywhere near the experience with electrification, en route provision of high-speed charging and autonomy.

Tesla’s Semi will be very profitable for Tesla.

And for the people who buy the electric, high-tech semi trucks.
