South Australian No Pokies MP Nick Xenophon has suggested James Hardie executives clean the bedpans of terminally ill asbestos victims as a form of community service.

He says the idea is less obscene than the massive payouts announced on Friday for company bosses who have resigned.

Chief executive Peter Macdonald will receive almost $9 million and chief financial officer Peter Shafron will receive $1.2 million.

But Mr Xenophon, who is a patron of the Asbestos Victims Association, says they should be forced to confront the consequences of their company's actions.

"Some people may be disgusted by the idea, but it's no where near as disgusting as dieing an excruciating death from mesothelioma," he said.

"We need to confront these executives with the consequences of their actions and if that involves forcing them, requiring them to care for asbestos victims, if it means that they have to clean up for asbestos victims, then that's one way of making them understand their responsibility."
