  1. Crean content, ambassador contrite after talks.

Federal Opposition leader Simon Crean has met the United States ambassador in Canberra to discuss the recent row over Labor's public statements on Iraq.

Mr Crean was furious when Mr Schieffer was quoted as saying Labor's policy was a rank appeal to anti-Americanism.

Simon Crean summoned Tom Schieffer to his office today to discuss the matter.

Mr Crean says he is satisfied the ambassador will not try to meddle in Australian politics again.

"I was very angry at what I believe was the outrageous intervention by the US ambassador in domestic political affairs," he said.

"I thought it was important that we meet face to face to talk about it, and today was that opportunity.

"It was a long and a productive meeting. Actually it was a cordial meeting."

Tom Schieffer says Mr Crean has reassured him the Labor Party will continue to support the US-Australia alliance.

"I regret it has been interpreted as some sort of attempt to intervene in Labor Party politics," he said.

"We have no interest in doing that. The United States is ready to work with the Labor Party and whoever it chooses to be its leader - that is our position."
