    I think that change and history of the meaning of the word applies in the USA

    Internationally I think the word tends now to be used more as a simile for bigoted

    1. obstinately or unreasonably attached to a belief, opinion, or faction, and intolerant towards other people's beliefs and practices.


      Those who politicise climate science and call people lefties and greenies, as if those are relevant terms in the discussion of the science, are occasionally going to cop a "redneck" back. And in some cases I would say with justification.
