Tasmania wants to lower the age children start school:

"Under the changes, the Government is lowering the compulsory school starting age in prep classes to four and a half. It means kindergarten will now be available to children at age three and a half. Currently it is compulsory for children to start prep in the year they turn five.Sep 19, 2016"

What a stupid idea. European children usually start school at age seven. The age our children start is already too young.

I'm no expert, but we were taught in psychology classes (years ago), that seven is the best age for children to begin school and this was well before the introduction of pre-schools. My niece is a psychologist and is holding her eldest son off going until 'the last minute' and will likely do the same with the second boy. Same went for my sister in law - all kids have attended unis and done very well academically. On the other hand, I was sent way, way too early and is all that eventuated was instead of going on to high school, I was made to repeat grade 6 'due to my age'. Didn't help in any way academically.

Fortunately, for the moment owing to the outcry from many concerned citizens, the change is not yet compulsory.

Note there is plenty of research against sending children before the age of seven - see second link.
