    ABC Online;

    American comedy legend Bob Hope has turned 100 today.

    Born in England in 1903, Lesley Townes Hope had a career which spanned 75 years and he was a friend to 11 United States presidents.

    He changed his name to Bob at the age of 21 because it looked better on a marque as he embarked on his career in vaudeville.

    In 1932, he switched to Broadway and in 1938 he mastered another medium, beginning the Pepsodent Radio Show.

    He teamed up with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour for seven road movies.

    Then in World War II, his career took another turn in what became his trademark, entertaining troops.

    Thirty-five states in the US have dubbed today "Bob Hope Day".
