The Bank of Japan spent almost $200 billion last year in an effort to keep the dollar higher against the yen. I heard today that the BOJ spent $30 billion this January as it continued to buy dollars. With all this fantastic intervention, the yen today is just off its highest level of the advance since its January 2002 lows. That all this BOJ intervention has been almost useless testifies to the inherent weakness of the dollar
