Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) - The Mauritanian government and the Total oil company Tuesday signed an agreement here allowing the company to prospect for oil in the country.
Mauritania Mines and Industry minister Zeidane H'Meida signed for the government, while Jean Phiplipps Magnant, vice president of the Maghreb branch of Total oil signed for the company.

Under the agreement, the French company would undertake oil exploration in the basin of Taoudeni, located in the Mauritanian desert.

It will conduct a series of geological studies on the site to identify two oil blocks located in the basin, officials said.

They said if oil were discovered in the basin, Total would then sign a contract with the Mauritanian government to exploit the commodity.
