Greens threaten Labor's safe Cunningham seat

  1. This is going to be a very big test for the ALP and Crean particularly. They have lost the support and respect of left leaning voters.

The Greens are a real chance of winning here. From my understandning, they will get everyones 2nd preference, either directly or indirectly.

The seat has been around for about 50 years, and has always been held by the ALP.

Greens threaten Labor's safe Cunningham seat
Today's Cunningham by-election in Labor Party heartland around Wollongong is expected to test the success of party leader Simon Crean.

The Labor Party has faced strong opposition throughout the campaign from its traditional supporters.

The decision by south coast trade union leader and teacher Peter Wilson to run as an independent dealt an early blow to the Labor Party but it is Greens candidate Michael Organ, who poses the greatest threat.

Mr Organ's primary vote in a recent poll rose to 29 per cent with the ALP at 38 per cent.

ABC election analyst Antony Green says without the Liberal Party running a candidate the result in Cunningham can not be easily applied to other marginal seats.

"This is a contest about where the Labor Party is going with its core support it doesn't really tell you a lot about how softly committed voters in marginal seats are going to vote," he said.

A total of 13 candidates are standing, including representatives from the Democrats, One Nation and an independent, who is promoting his Liberal Party membership.
