This plan is very workable, and could potentially save Australia hundreds of millions of dollars in the near future.

It is great for the environment, and would also open up the way for a different type of government bond for investors. Whether it be in the current form or not, this proposal has significant merit, and will be part of the solution Australia needs for it's burgeoning water problems.

THE Federal Government will consider as a priority the proposal from Australia's third richest man, Richard Pratt, to conserve water.

Mr Pratt wants to pipe thousands of kilometres of irrigation channels as one way to conserve water and has also suggested introducing water bonds.
Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson today said Mr Pratt's proposal had real merit.

"The Pratt Water Group has suggested that governments should adopt a national approach to water savings and conduct a feasibility study about water savings in the Murrumbidgee Valley," Mr Anderson said.

"There is no doubt that there is real scope for achieving water savings."
