Global fertiliser output will expand to meet rising demand: FAO
    27 February 2008

World fertiliser production is expected to catch up with demand over the next five years, enough to support the expected rise in food and biofuel output, says the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations.
In a new report entitled "Current world fertilizer trends and outlook to 2011-12", FAO says higher commodity prices have increased crop production sharply.

This has greatly lifted fertiliser use, explains Jan Poulisse, FAO fertiliser expert.

The FAO report estimates that world fertiliser supply (nitrogen, phosphate and potash nutrient) will increase by some 34 million tonnes between 2007-08 and 2011-12.

That represents an annual growth rate of 3pc, comfortably sufficient to cover forecast demand growth of 1.9pc a yer.

Total production is expected to grow from 206.5m tonnes in 2007-08 to 241m tonnes in 2011-12.

Fertiliser demand will increase from 197m tonnes today to 216 million tonnes in 2011-12.
