Glencore utilises lithium ion battery tech

Electrovaya, a designer, developer and manufacturer of lithium ion battery technology solutions, has announced the delivery of its battery technology at Glencore’s Raglan Mine in Quebec.

The company has added the battery component to diesel generators used at the operation and is expected to reduce fuel consumption between 35-50%, which would significantly mitigate energy costs and environmental impacts.

The deal is worth $700,000 and the technology has been installed collaboratively with Tupliq Energy Corp. and Hatch Ltd. as engineering coordinators for the project.

The battery technology can be fitted to diesel, solar and wind generators and has been designed for use in remote mining operations which have no grid connections and instead rely upon alternative energy sources.

The implementation of the system is hoped to reduce the costs to mining operators, with the Raglan mine consuming 50 million litres of diesel per year, whilst also minimising the risk and reliance of transporting fuels to remote locations.

Dr. Sankar Das Gupta, CEO of Electrovaya commented, “the mining industry is focussed on reduction of diesel usage and reduction of carbon footprint, and Electrovaya’s lithium ion 2.0 technology when paired with a diesel generator allows the generator to operate at maximum efficiency, reducing diesel consumption substantially and lowering maintenance costs”.

The reduction of diesel consumption in a diesel generator by pairing to a lithium battery is a generic solution to many industrial sectors including mining, micro-grids and powering remote locations and it is estimated that there are about 200 million diesel generators in the world.”

The company says that its battery technology can store generated energy at an efficiency of greater than 90% to further improve energy efficiencies.
