NBD - video unavailable: what would I do? Well, it would cost money, but we need to seriously think about introducing some kind of training for youngsters who grow up without fathers and who come from a violent background. That violence is quite often only a dim memory, but violence gets into your bones; defence, disrespect, attack becomes part of the DNA of the former victim of violence. So: if we are going to be bringing people here from war-torn places where violence is endemic and viewed as a legitimate and necessary response to violence committed upon oneself, then we need to counter this with training, especially if we are talking about young males without a father figure in their lives. We used to have Police Boys clubs here in W.A. - it's quietened down considerably. I know they were doing the usual clubby things with young people, but also teaching them competitive games, they did sport. I would extend that - and it would cost money - but get them together twice weekly, get them out into the bush, get them to do sport, walk, talk, discuss things and teach them about discipline. These organisations for youths exist, why isn't there a more pro-active promotion happening? Once they have committed a criminal act, it isn't so easy as they get into the 'system' prison etc. which are the worst places to become civilised and the best places to learn the more sophisticated tricks of criminality and violence. I remember one action here in W.A. - now 20 or so years ago - young people volunteered to take on various projects out in the country, like helping with renovating places of historic value in the country. And what about the churches of all denominations who are all big on talk but not many are big on action - they could be a shining example by tackling or at least attempting to tackle some of the more difficult social problems of our times. But it's so much easier - and I am guilty of that too - to be a keyboard warrior - write a harangue and sit back self-satisfied to look at a 'decent' whinge. Taurisk
