    Gang rapist relocated
    August 18, 2002

A gang rapist jailed for 55 years has been moved from Sydney's Long Bay jail to another maximum security prison at Goulburn for his own safety.

A Corrective Services Department spokesman said the prisoner, aged 20, was moved yesterday, two days after receiving a maximum sentence of 55 years in jail for his leading role in three separate gang rapes in Sydney's western suburbs during August 2000.

During his sentencing in Sydney's District Court, defence barrister Terry Healey said the prisoner was already in protective custody 23 hours a day.

The man, who must serve 40 years without parole, could be named next month after his brother is sentenced over two of the incidents.

The rape cases, one of which involved 14 young males in a succession of sexual assaults, caused community uproar, but the ringleader's family maintain he is innocent of the crimes and an appeal has been lodged.
