You seem to downplay the distinction of what the Church leaders saw as a threat to the theology and teachings of the Church, and what was seen as a threat, that which there was no need to suppress, perhaps even encourage.
Where in your attempt at defending the heinous behaviour of the Church in its defence of its dogma, you conflate the two, basically saying, ''oh, the Church encouraged science and learning.''
Sure it did, but only when ideas did not come into conflict with Church Dogma.
That is the the point. That, undeniably, is what the Church Hierarchy did. Even as recorded in Church archives.
There is no defence for some of their actions, just ignorance and superstition, defending their business model, the power and prestige of the Church.
