Local telco technology to debut at regional trade show down south

PETALING JAYA: WIRELESS local loop (WLL) telecommunications specialist Cape Range Wireless Ltd said it will launch its ARCADIAN Wireless Communications System at the CommunicAsia2002 show next month in Singapore.
ARCADIAN Wireless Communications System is a cost effective wireless local loop solution that provides telephone access to under-served and remote areas, the company (www.caperangewireless.com) said in a statement.

Its Malaysian subsidiary, Cape Range Wireless Malaysia Sdn Bhd, worked closely with its Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) status technology partner Embedded Wireless Labs Sdn Bhd, to develop the system.

Consequently, the entire product cycle – from development, manufacturing and testing of the system – was carried out in Malaysia.

The product will be shipped out from Malaysia to Cape Range’s distributors worldwide, it said in its statement.

    Bridging the divide

Traditionally, remote markets require prohibitively high initial investment, Cape Range Wireless said in its statement.

The ARCADIAN Communications System makes it viable for network operators to service remote areas due to its scalable architecture.

This means that operators can keep initial costs down by deploying networks incrementally, extending coverage as need arises.

The ARCADIAN Wireless Communications System’s long range and high-speed capability also makes it an ideal system for extension into remote service areas or for overlay of superior services for data transfer, fax and PBX in a voice-only network, the company claimed.

It transmits over a range of 50km at a speed of 2 Mbps (megabits per second) while maintaining clear voice quality.

The system uses two proprietary technologies: The Internet Protocol Multiple Access (iPMA) protocol, and the Havana technology.

The iPMA protocol was specifically designed to support voice and high-speed data in the fixed wireless environment, Cape Range Wireless said.

Its efficient voice-handling guarantees that all voice information enters the radio link in an orderly way, without channel congestion.

This frees bandwidth and eliminates the need for throughput redundancies allocated to handle the probability of multiple users transmitting simultaneously.

Thus, base and remote stations can transmit simultaneously, independent of each other.

This is unavailable over standard protocols, the company claimed.

Havana is a “spread spectrum” technology that allows remote stations to receive very low-level signals, even at 50km, thus extending the coverage area of the ARCADIAN Wireless Communications System.

Havana enables multiple channels to occupy the same bandwidth without interfering with each other, thereby increasing bandwidth utilisation.

It also greatly lowers transmitting power consumption, thus saving costs of power amplification, the company claimed.

CommunicAsia2002 (www.communicasia.com) is set to take place in Singapore on June 18-21.

The company currently has contracts for deploying wireless local loop and ADSL for Telekom Malaysia Bhd. The contracts are worth in excess of RM320mil and will take the group on till 2004. However, the group is continuously bidding for newer projects and has so far submitted 12 bids for various jobs to Telekom.
