fertiliser prices tipped to rise

  1. 599 Posts.
The article below suggest that there could be a sharp increase in fertiliser prices next year. Just like how sharply prices fell last year because farmers could not borrow to buy fertiliser as a result of the GFC. At present, economic recovery is taking shape, and fertiliser prices have been rising, and is forecast to be higher next year:

GROWERS planning their future fertiliser purchases should note that prices are expected to climb back up to the stratospheric levels of 2007-2008 by next year.

CSBP fertiliser procurement manager Andrew Macrae told delegates at last week's AAAC conference that this trend would be triggered by recovery from the global crisis and continuing growth in the large developing countries of Asia, which would put pressure on the world's capacity to feed a growing and more affluent population.

"The world is not awash with grain stocks. World import demand for the major phosphate and potash products is forecast to rebound sharply in 2010," he said.

Mr Macrae said the sharp fall in the price of fertilisers in 2008-2009 was largely due to the financial turmoil that engulfed global markets.

"In early 2008, rising consumption of agri-commodities associated with tightening grain stocks gave a very bullish outlook for fertiliser demand," he said.

"At the end of 2007 and early 2008, the fertiliser industry was producing at full capacity and there was no slack in the system.

"All raw material input prices for fertiliser manufacture were increasing, and by mid-2008, fertiliser imports and fertiliser prices reached record levels.

"The financial crisis then turned into a global problem that led most developed economies into recession, and global demand of most commodities slowed drastically."
