‘Buy fertilisers now’ says trader as prices rocket
    Business - FG | 29 February, 2008

FERTILISER prices have – as predicted – continued to soar and farmers are being advised to get their supplies organised sooner rather than later.

Calum Findlay, fertiliser trader with Gleadell, said granular urea prices had reached £300 and were likely to increase to around £315 over the next few weeks. This time last year, prices were around £240.

Meanwhile, ammonium nitrate will not be available until the second half of March, but will cost around £280, compared to around £170 last year.

“The big problem is that no-one quite realises how big the grassland market is. Those guys haven’t come into the market yet and when they do things will move on again,” said Mr Findlay. “Farmers need to buy today and finance it rather than sitting and waiting and buying when they need it,” he advised.

Meanwhile, phosphate prices have also reached new highs as demand in the northern hemisphere has surged, while supplies and importers of MOP and SOP are reporting very low stocks.
