Not trying to stir up another bun fight, but I thought it would be proper to point out an error in Bears and bulls post re the Bar Kochba discoveries.

The article was in the Jerusalem Post rather than Ha'aretz. No intent to restart debate!

Bar-Kochba-era scrolls found in Dead Sea cave
    Nov. 19, 2002

The discovery last week of rare artifacts, dating from the time of the Bar-Kochba revolt against Rome, in a cave in the Ein Gedi Nature Reserve near the Dead Sea was announced on Tuesday by the archeologists who made the find.

The artifacts include coins bearing the name "Shimon," believed to be a reference to Shimon Bar-Kochba, leader of the revolt from 132 CE-135 CE wooden arrow shafts and metal arrow heads, and two papyrus scrolls.

Although the text of the scrolls has yet to be examined, it is this find that is the most exciting, said , who headed the team along with Prof. Hanan Eshel of Bar-Ilan University, with the assistance of California's Stanford University.

Ever since the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947, archeologists have searched the Judean Desert without much success for other caves holding additional scrolls. The most recent such find was made a decade ago in the Jericho area.

"These documents probably aren't directly connected with the Dead Sea Scrolls found further to the north near Qumran," said Frumkin. "But the very fact that after all these years, we have found a previously undiscovered cave with such artifacts proves there still could be more out there we don't yet know about."

The cave was discovered in a remote area of the Ein Gedi reserve during a survey of the region by the archeologists utilizing aerial photography and electronic surveillance equipment. Archeologists used rappelling equipment to enter the cave, which was not accessible by foot.

Archeologists have found similar finds dating from the Jewish revolt in hidden caves in other parts of Israel, that are believed to have been used by Bar-Kochba's rebel army as hiding places from the Roman forces.
