    What were they restraining him from?

    I doubt you could claim reasonable force to restrain someone if you were not restraining them from a specific action.

    Stepping in between the kid and Anning to separate them would have been reasonable, as the kid wasn't running , nor was he attacking Anning when the kid himself was attacked.


    The egg attack was assault, and the kid would have been more likely to have been charged if Anning and the others had not attacked the kid.

    In theory the kid, Anning, and the others involved should all be charged with assault, but I expect the police will need to weigh up everyone's involvement and consider the options which are made more complicated because of what happened to the kid after the egging.
