George W Bush appears likely to score crucial wins in Ohio and Florida, putting him on the verge of a victory over Democratic challenger John Kerry and re-election to a second term in the White House.

Two networks - Fox and NBC - have projected Ohio will go to Mr Bush.

If it does, Senator Kerry would need to win New Hampshire and Nevada, both won by Mr Bush four years ago, and hold all of the remaining states won by Democrat Al Gore in 2000 to manage a 269-269 electoral tie.

That would throw the race to the Republican-led House of Representatives, where Mr Bush would be almost certain to win.

Mr Bush captured Florida, the biggest of the toss-up battleground states, and racked up wins across the country to move to the edge of victory. Senator Kerry won Pennsylvania's 21 electoral votes but could not break through to win a state won by Mr Bush in 2000.

The CNN and Fox television networks have also predicted Mr Bush will win in Alaska.

Large turnouts have been reported nationwide and few major voting glitches have been recorded.
