costs pressures

No doubt, the analysts will be busy over the next few days/weeks. It looks like Ziggy did not control costs during his final run (Sol will probably be telling this story for many months to come):

Analyst Rosalie Nelson said capped price plans have lowered the mobile price premium over fixed from an estimated 800 per cent to as low as 50 per cent for a three-minute call. If the pressures on its revenue line weren't enough, Telstra's underlying costs rose by 4 per cent, faster than its underlying revenue growth.

Capital expenditure at Telstra has once again started to soar after being pushed down to just $3 billion in 2003-2004. Last year, it passed $3.6 billion, boosted by a third-generation mobile network and booming demand for broadband. This year it is set to climb towards $4.5 billion and may go even higher following the completion of Mr Trujillo's reviews. Telstra has set aside $100 million for the redundancies, which will see about 1000 jobs go.

But Mr Trujillo signalled that as part of its strategic review more cuts might be made. The reviews are due to be finished in October when Mr Trujillo will once again brief the market. "We have got in plan about $100 million for redundancies that probably equates to around 1000 people, but I should point out that the review will determine what happens in the future," Mr Trujillo said.
