computer eavesdropping

A day or two back someone posted an article beginning as follows -

"Devices capture everything you ever type, then can send it via your ethernet
card to the Dept. of Homeland Security without your knowledge, consent or a
search warrant each time you log onto the internet!"

I asked my knowledgeable nephew (IT spec) about the hardware mentioned in the article. His comments -

This is real in the sense that certain notebook manufacturers use this sort of technology to assist their help desk people when providing technical support to customers. Its a remote assistance type thing. People don't like the idea of being monitored which is probably why the tech support guy in the article was so abrupt. Keylogging hardware and software has been around for years and its now legal for employers to monitor computer use so long as employees are made aware that they are being monitored. Whether the gov secretly monitor ordinary citizens computer use, unlikely but possible.

Whats more scary is what some guys at a US uni have managed to do. Using highly sensitive audio equipment they have written a program capable of differentiating between the audio properties of the clicks of the keys on a keyboard. So they know what your typing just by listening to your keystrokes. And they plan to release this software for free on the net.
