A Federal Government review is expected to consider moving many of the Defence Force's warships and thousands of personnel to Western Australia.

It is understood the Government will nominate oil and gas infrastructure off WA's north-west coast as a major defence priority.

The Defence Minister Stephen Smith will announce the details in Canberra later this morning.

It is believed the focus will be a major shift of defence assets away from traditional bases in New South Wales and Victoria to northern Australia, along with more patrols of resource infrastructure in the Indian Ocean.
