I’ve owned BHP for 25 years and have zero regrets. For a long while their dividend was very low. ( compared to say banks ). But even when they were at their worst in the late 1990s with a series of mining blunders, they got through it…The key is huge financial firepower and diversification. Say what you like, they have a portfolio of mouthwatering tier one, long life, low cost assets that are the envy of most of their competitors. With assets like Escondida, the Gulf of Mexico oil, and Olympic Dam, they will keep churning cash for decades, regardless of the commodity cycle. FMG does iron ore, that’s it. A one trick pony who will keep you happy while the iron ore good times roll, but when iron ore sinks watch out. There’s no way they could withstand the shocks that BHP faced and remain floating.BHP balances that risk with a suite of other minerals - nickel, copper, silver/gold, oil and gas. No comparison between the two companies. BHP is a Rolls Royce.
