I'd say Bernadi ventured out on his own because he thought there was a considerable number of right wing conservative voters that would go with him. He believed the bs that they were feeding him.
Looks like he's discovered that the right wing conservatives are a very small number of people and he has very little support. It is pretty lonely where he is. Now that Abbott has gone the media has lost interest in the right wing.
So, he's trying to crawl back under the wing of the Liberal party rather than get a real job.
Leave him and his conservative mates out in the cold I say.
I'm sure there will be plenty more suitable centrally minded candidates for the Liberal party come election time.
