    Negative gearing makes sense in a much wider case. Is it stupid to lose money to just get tax back yep, but it makes sense to NG in the early years just like any business as it takes time to establish a business in many cases. It all comes down to your plan. It is simply treating gains and losses equally but I know a few here are too stupid to actually understand that. You want to get rid of NG - then don't tax rental income on top of your other income.
