BANKSTOWN COUNCIL (LABOR CONTROLLED) MAKES BANKSTOWN A REFUGEE WELCOME ZONE]

    BANKSTOWN CITY COUNCIL

AGENDA For the ORDINARY MEETING OF COUNCIL 21st October, 2003

    ITEM 3.1 Refugee Welcome Zone

    FILE TC 103

I [the mayor] have received representations from a number of local organisations supporting an initiative of the Refugee Council of Australia and requesting that Council declare Bankstown a REFUGEE WELCOME ZONE.

Such a declaration on behalf of the people of Bankstown is a committment to Welcoming refugees into our community, upholding the Human Rights of Refugees, demonstrating Compassions for refugees and enhancing cultural and religious Diversity in our community.

I commend this initiative to Council knowing that it represents the wishes of many within our community who recognise the role Bankstown has played in welcoming refugees and migrants over so many years at Villawood Migrant Hostel. It is also appropriate as our way of recognising Refugee Week.
