"Amity to try new trick at Whicher
    By James Chessell
    November 8, 2003

The moment of truth is fast approaching for Amity Oil and its Whicher Range gasfield in Western Australia's south-west.

While success in the Turkish oil hunt has done the trick for Amity's share price, the market's focus is well and truly on whether Amity chief Howard McLaughlin can succeed where others have failed.

Whicher Range was discovered by Union Oil Development Corp back in 1968 and is a big field with 4 trillion cubic feet of gas.

The problem is getting it to the surface. The four previous wells drilled by various operators have failed to get the gas flowing at commercial rates, ie, about 5 million cubic feet a day.

Water used in earlier drilling has damaged the reservoirs and reduced gas flow.

McLaughlin, formerly in charge of BHP Billiton's oil and gas exploration businesses out of Houston, was in Sydney this week, explaining to fund managers why he reckons it's going to be different this time round.

Amity will drill its Whicher Range-5 well using air rather than water, and if further stimulation is required, may bring in liquid carbon dioxide.

With the drilling under way, Amity and its Korean partners will be watching with great interest to see if the new methods will get Whicher flowing"
