Rain threatens Australian macadamia nut harvest

It has been a very bad season for Australian Macadamia nut growers, and the prices reached their lowest point. It's not only the low prices but also the constantly rising costs: fuel and fertilizers are becoming extremely expensive.

For the upcoming season another threat is the rain. In the growing area for Macadamia nuts it has been raining constantly since October. The dry days can be counted on one hand. Most growers haven't been able to mow the grass and perform the preharvest cleaning. The soil is simply too wet. This means that many nuts won't be collected but crushed as soon as it's possible to drive over the wet soil.

Originally the Macadamia tree is a rain forest tree. Therefore the weather is quite good for the nuts, but the growers absolutely need some dry days to be able to do their work. If those dry days don't come soon, the outlook is gloomy.
