Opening up international trade was the beginning of the end for the unions. On a wage level, we were never going to compete with the international products coming in, and manufacturing was the casualty. When they had a large base, they were nearly responsible in their dealings but as time went by and the numbers dwindled, they became more thuggish, to covet what remaining ground they could. They've morphed into a protection racket, of sorts, which is where we are today.
