April 25 1915 is a day when the defence forces of Australia
and New Zealand faced a supreme test of courage, on a
dark Sunday morning they landed in the dark and under
heavy fire, climbed steep cliffs and won a foothold on
the plateau and ridges. Over the next 8 months there was
little respite and they found themselves under constant
fire and shelling.
Wherever you may find yourself tomorrow, please take a
moment to reflect on their sacrifice... for it has won us
freedoms that can so often be taken for granted.
The men and women of today's Defence forces should also
be acknowledged, for they too do it for love of country
and to maintain those hard won freedoms.
Lest we forget.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
