ansett workers want redundancy payments

I just watched the 7.30 report and an ex Ansett worker said, with a straight face, that he was owed 94 weeks redundancy payment, and that the government should make sure he gets it.

He has been paid some $30,000 so far but it's not enough - his annual leave, his long service leave and eight weeks redundancy.

    Pity the poor creditors.

Can anyone explain to me when we decided that if a company went broke the employees were made redundant? My understanding of redundancy is different. I would be majorly peed off if any of my taxes or levies went to pay these so called "entitlements".

    Regards
