Lapdog - it seems we have always 'corrected' history. You just need to take a look at the various Pharaohs who ruled ancient Egypt and several of them have been written out of history. We know about them now because our historical specialists (Egyptologists - many from European nations, but Egypt have their own as well) have carefully deciphered and then documented most of Ancient Egypt's history.

Most European cities have statues, firstly of their historic rulers put up during their lifetimes or just after, and some famous men who were born in that particular city - even of more recent notable politicians - and they have always had stuff scribbled on them, at least in the last 50 years, it gets cleaned, it happens again.

I remember waiting in line in one of the wonderful Bavarian Castles of Ludwig (?) - it took a full hour of waiting to get to the final open door. In the meantime we all amused ourselves by studying the graffiti and reading various comments people had scribbled on the walls in that particular historic corridor. In Pompeii men had scribbled comments about the 'ladies in attendance' on the walls, still there to see after 2000 years.

The 'mob' will out - nothing better to do. Since there is nothing better to do 'lets protest' or 'deface something'?

Re Japan: I have met a number of people who are totally charmed by Japan and the Japanese and keep going back for yet another holiday. I do like their sense of the aesthetic and manners, which is all a world removed from atrocities committed in war by their soldiers. However, I dislike that it is such a regimented society and hence won't visit - too much like a look into our collective future.

Most nations, when they look at their own history objectively, have shameful bits they don't like to talk about. Australia is still young and yet we have an 'Aboriginal problem' which we shouldn't have, had the people in charge in the early days of the colony acknowledged them as having 'humanity'; now we are really in trouble and their anger does not surprise me. Keeping a cool head is the answer.
