Hi 86, animals are generally as clean as their owners so depends on the household normally. Also a lot of areas in Australia have extreme weather during different times of the year so it can be cruel to put some pets in the middle of that.
As far as "health and hygiene" goes, I would rather be in someone's house with their pets than touch a shopping trolley or money, but yet most people wouldn't think twice of shopping and grabbing something to eat with their fingers on the way out...
I know which I prefer, and pets give you love and company to boot.
