america: full speed for war

  1. Feb 17 2003

THE US ignored world opinion last night and insisted it still plans war with Iraq.

President Bush's aides shrugged off the biggest peace protest since Vietnam and Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld turned France's anti-war stance into a joke.

He was alleged to have told a colleague: "Going to war without the French is like going deer hunting without your accordion."

French President Jacques Chirac insisted weapons inspectors should be given more time and resources and said conflict could "create a large number of little bin Ladens".

But he didn't rule out UN- backed military action, saying: "If Iraq doesn't co-operate and the inspectors say this isn't working, it could be war."

But last night US National Security adviser Condoleezza Rice replied: "It is time for this to end. Enough is enough."
