This article is from the Saturday, 18 Jul 2020 issue of The West Australian Newspaper Digital Edition.

Sage not frank on Timis tail
Perth Glory owner and veteran dealmaker Tony Sage looks to have dealt with a private challenge.

There has been a lifting of caveats over his City Beach home and his CBD apartment retreat linked to dealings in 2017 involving squillionaire Romanian investor Frank Timis, an old Sage associate who once called Perth home.

Sage, who is usually keen to discuss his affairs, has not returned calls from a HOTT ferret about just what led to the caveats being lodged over his properties in 2017.

But word doing the recovering Perth cocktail circuit is that Timis financed a $1.06 million Cape Lambert capital raising that was carried out through the Sage-allied company 1620 Capital Pty Ltd and announced on Halloween 2017. Sage’s loyal wingman John Boardman is believed to have worked with 1620 during his bankruptcy from 2013 to 2018, including helping develop Sage empire interests in Sierra Leone near dirt controlled by Timis’ companies.

Cape Lambert took action against Timis-linked companies in May 2017 in the High Court of Sierra Leone. But the old mates had seemingly smoked the public peace pipe by July and were back doing private deals by October.

The caveat document shows Sage, Timis and 1620 Capital created a legal charge confirmed by a deed of security dated October 23, 2017.

Those caveats over Sage’s properties were withdrawn on May 7 this year, in days of the remarkably resilient and well-travelled Boardman becoming the major shareholder of 1620 Capital.

As Neville Chamberlain said when returning from Europe in 1938: “Peace in our time.”

Not complete peace, mind you. Boardman is due to face Perth Magistrate’s Court on July 28 to fight 60 charges he concealed or removed property while bankrupt.
