One of the world's most influential Islamic leaders has condemned all attacks by suicide bombers. The criticism was made at an international conference of Islamic scholars in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur. Grand Sheikh of Al Azhar, Mohammed Sayed Tantawi, said his condemnation of suicide bombers was unequivocal. He said he would make no exception for those who carried out attacks on Israelis. He called extremist groups the enemy of Islam and said they had appropriated the religion and the notion of Jihad, which means struggle for their own ends. Instead, he said Muslim nations should wholeheartedly open their arms to people who want peace, a message echoed by several speakers.

Still very much a minority view, but at least a glimmer of hope that this backward and brutal religion might change for the better.
