re: uk law makers threaten to quit LONDON, March 8 (Reuters) - Five British lawmakers have

threatened to quit their government jobs if Prime Minister Tony

Blair goes to war against Iraq without a second United Nations

    resolution, a newspaper reported.

The Sunday Telegraph said the five members of parliament,

who work as ministerial aides in Blair's government, were ready

    to step down.

"There is a point where you have to decide whether this is

right or wrong. This is about upholding the authority of the

U.N.," one of the five, Michael Jabez Foster, who works with

Attorney General Lord Goldsmith, told the paper.

The United States and Britain are sponsoring a U.N. Security

Council resolution to give Iraq an ultimatum to destroy any

banned weapons by March 17 or face war. Washington has vowed to

attack Iraq with or without U.N. approval.

Many parliamentarians in Blair's ruling Labour Party are

alarmed by the proposed ultimatum and have already warned of an

even bigger rebellion than last week's protest in which 122

Labour members of parliament voted against Blair's policy on

    Iraq.

Blair also faces fierce public opposition to war. On

Satu*day, thousands of peace protesters took to the streets

    across Britain.

At least 10,000 people protested in Manchester, northern

England, and more than 20 people were arrested in Colchester,

eastern England, after staging a sit-down protest outside an

    army barracks.

Last month, around one million anti-war protesters marched

through London in the country's biggest ever peace march.
