Changes to toughen US bankruptcy protection laws which will take effect later this month means that, if Delta and Northwest Airlines want to declare bankruptcy, they will have to do it soon. Delaying may well mean that they won't have the creditor protection of Chapter 11.
Airline sentiment globally will take a hit with a one-two punch like this.
Neither airline competes on QAN routes, so there's no opportunity for them in the demise of either.
