Iraqi oil official assassinated
Monday, September 27, 2004
Sana Toma Sulaiman, the Deputy Regional Director Oil Products Department with Iraq's North Oil Co (NOC), has been gunned down by unknown assailants in the city of Mosul.
The Oil Products Department is responsible for supplying Nineveh with oil and gas.
Sana's death comes on the back of a botched assassination attempt of NOC Regional Director Mohammed Zibari on 18 September. Five of Mohammed's bodyguards died in the attack.
In a statement Nineveh Governor's Office spokesman Hazim Jallawi said, "Sana was shot dead as he headed to work in a taxi in Mosul."
According to Colonel Muzahim Ibrahim of Mosul's police force, "The gunmen drove up and opened fire on the official as he was on his way to work, and then they fled." The city coroner, Ahmed Abdullah, said Sana died from multiple bullet wounds to the head and throat.
Mosul suffers from violence and drive-by shootings targeting government officials by insurgents fighting a running guerrilla battle with the US-led coalition forces and Iraq's interim government and fledgling security forces
