Here’s how I think it works:
bid/offer spread at 3:59 is 16.5/17c
sales have been 17c all day
at auction someone wants in and so puts 100,000 shares to buy at 17c (matched by plenty more sellers at 17c)
at 4:09 someone places a sell for 100001 at 16.5c, which then all go through at 4:10 for 16.5c
So it closes down at 16.5c despite trading at 17c all day thanks to that 1 share.
Potentially one buyer is left with a very expensive single share at 16.5c + commission!
